In the seven decades of my life, spanning the 1950’s to the present day, I’ve seen many inventions, from the microwave, instant coffee pot, space saving devices, and the telephone that doesn’t need to be hard-wired into the wall anymore, but fits in the palm of your hand and your pocket.
I saw men land on the moon and NASA sending rockets to Mars. All with the help of inventions not seen in the previous century. Space flight couldn’t happen without the computer.
For me, the computer is the most significant and important invention in my lifetime. Nothing brings people together better than the computer and the various social media sites available to keep us connected. The computer also makes it easier to type words on the screen. It’s not your old-fashioned typewriter, and I don’t have a bottle of white-out at my elbow to erase all the mistakes I make typing my manuscripts.
With Microsoft Word, I can easily delete all errors, copy and paste, move paragraphs around, and editor makes my writing more succinct.
When I began writing in the 1980’s, I started with paper and pen, moved to the typewriter, to the word processor, and then to the computer. Even the computer has made advancements in technology. I no longer need to use a floppy disk or hard disk. Everything is stored in the Cloud. I no longer need to worry that I will lose manuscripts if my computer crashes and I need to figure out a way to retrieve my hard work. I can buy a new computer and everything I’ve ever written is right at my fingertips.
Nothing in my life competes with the computer for the best invention in my lifetime. What’s yours? Thanks for reading.
