In most construction projects today a team of professionals builds homes and businesses according to the blueprints provided by architectural firms. However, there is one construction project where people can help build homes, Habitat for Humanity. Regular people work alongside professionals to build homes for people who qualify, including the family who will live in the home.
When Nehemiah set about building the walls of Jerusalem, every family had a place on the wall to build. However, there was one family who felt it beneath them to build—the nobles of the Tekoites.
Many Christians are like those nobles. They want to call themselves Christians, but they don’t want to put in the effort to work in the calling Yeshuwa gave them. They delegate the responsibility to others, then take credit when they complete the work.
Remember you are Yeshuwa’s workmanship. He laid the foundation of your life. You alone are responsible for building on the foundation of your life. You cannot delegate the responsibility to someone else to build on the foundation of your life. Nor can you stand by and watch while others do the work. The effort you put into your life will reflect the work Yeshuwa called you to do.
Everyone has a place on the wall to build. Yeshuwa called people to preach, teach, administer, work in the gifts of the Hagios Pneuma, and any number of other tasks found in the body of Christos. No one is exempt from the work Yeshuwa called you to do.
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as Theos has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, but the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christos, and individually members of one another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Ephesians 4:11 He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christos, 13 till we come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Huios of Theos, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christos; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in everything into Him who is the head—Christos— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Everyone shared in building the walls of Jerusalem and would rejoice when they completed the work. Those who stood by and watched did not have the same joy in the completion as those who did the work.
What has Yeshuwa called you to do in the body of Christos? Are you working in your calling, or are you standing by listening and watching as everyone else does the work Yeshuwa called them to do? You have important work in the body of Christos. You might not think so, but left undone, the work Yeshuwa called you to do will cause a gap only you can fill.
Let’s pray: Father, help me do Your work in the body of Christ. Be my hands and feet, my mouth, and ears. Give me a heart of compassion for the lost. Work in me as I work for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
