High school was fun and it wasn’t fun. I was not part of the ‘in’ crowd. I didn’t date. I only had three friends, none of whom lived in the city but on a farm. So, I didn’t spend much time with my friends outside of school.
So, what did I learn that stuck with me all these years? I liked my teachers and my classes. I was part of the Senior Class Play – One Foot in Heaven. It was tremendous fun. I had the smallest part in the play, but it didn’t matter, I was in the play. I was also a Student Senate Alternate. That was fun.
Okay, I’m trying to figure out what I learned in high school. Not much if I can’t think of anything.
Working on the Homecoming float each year was fun. The senior float always won, no matter what. I think it was rigged.
I learned taking dares in gym class could be embarrassing. My friend dared me to look down the stairs into boys locker room. Yes, I took the dare and saw the naked backside of the gym teacher. He didn’t see me, thank goodness.
I learned how to spend as much time away from home and doing extra-curricular activities as much as possible. Home life wasn’t pleasant. I enjoyed going to football and basketball games. Home and away. Riding the bus to the away games was always fun.
I seriously don’t remember much about my classes or my teachers. I couldn’t even tell you their names without looking in my yearbook. Speech was fun. I remember giving a couple of speeches and learning about public speaking. I still can’t stand in front of anyone without shaking uncontrollably. It’s a good thing I had the smallest part in the Senior Class Play. Two lines.
I remember dissecting frogs and worms in biology class. Maybe Home Ec was the best class. I enjoyed learning how to cook and sew. My least favorite class was typing and shorthand. I still don’t type fast, my best is 39 words per minute. At least I don’t hunt and peck. I’m glad I took typing, oh it was on a typewriter, not a computer. It’s the one thing I still use everyday.
So maybe the thing I learned most in high school was typing because I still use it today and will for many more years to come as I pound out my next book. At least it’s not on a typewriter and I’m not wasting paper when I make typing mistakes. A simple backspace to delete the misspelled word is all I need now. Not whiteout or correction tape.
What did you learn in high school? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading. The image is my high school graduation picture.
