Day 159 – Prayer

Psalm 60:1 (To the Chief Musician. Set to “Lily of the Testimony.” A Michtam of David. For teaching. When he fought against Mesopotamia and Syria of Zobah, and Joab returned and killed twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.) O Elohiym, You cast us off; You broke us down; You were displeased; oh, restore us again! 2 You made the earth tremble; You broke it; heal its breaches, for it shakes. 3 You showed Your people hard things; You made us drink the wine of confusion. 4 You gave a banner to those who fear You, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah 5 That Your beloved may be delivered, save with Your right hand, and hear me.

6 Elohiym spoke in His holiness: “I will rejoice; I will divide Shechem and measure out the Valley of Succoth. 7 Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the helmet for My head; Judah is My lawgiver. 8 Moab is My washpot; over Edom I will cast My shoe; Philistia, shout in triumph because of Me.” 9 Who will bring me to the strong city? Who will lead me to Edom? 10 Is it not You, O Elohiym, who cast us off? You, O Elohiym, who did not go out with our armies? 11 Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless. 12 Through Elohiym we will do valiantly, for it is He who will tread down our enemies.

When plans don’t work out like you hoped, you look for someone to blame.

It looked like everything went wrong with David when he went to war against Syria. In the parenthetical clause before the psalm, it says it’s a teaching psalm. David always encouraged himself in Elohiym before every battle. However, what would it look like if David failed to pray and ask for Elohiym’s help? It would look like Elohiym forsook Israel and fought against them and helped her enemies as David wrote. It’s not what happened.

1 Chronicles 18:1 After this it happened that David attacked the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines. 2 Then he defeated Moab, and the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought tribute. 3 David defeated Hadadezer, king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his power by the River Euphrates. 4 David took from him one thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. David also hamstrung the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots. 5 When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants and brought tribute. Thus, JEHOVAH preserved David wherever he went. 7 David took the shields of gold on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from Tibhath and from Chun, cities of Hadadezer, David brought a large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and the articles of bronze.

9 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 he sent Hadoram his son to King David, to greet him and bless him, because he fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou); and Hadoram brought with him every kind of articles of gold, silver, and bronze. 11 King David also dedicated these to JEHOVAH, along with the silver and gold he brought from these nations—from Edom, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from Amalek. 12 Moreover, Abishai the son of Zeruiah killed eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 13 He also put garrisons in Edom, and the Edomites became David’s servants. JEHOVAH preserved David wherever he went. 14 Thus, David reigned over Israel and administered judgment and justice to his people.

JEHOVAH preserved David because he relied on Him to go ahead of him into the battle and he dedicated the spoils to JEHOVAH.

When you don’t pray and ask Yeshuwa to fight for you against Satan, you won’t see victory in your battles. It will look like what David portrayed in the psalm. Satan will win the battle. However, when you pray, seek Yeshuwa’s face, and depend on Him to lead, you will see victory in every battle Satan brings against you, just as David did when he relied on JEHOVAH to go ahead of his armies into battle.

Nobody wants to see Satan win. Pray, seek Yeshuwa, and you will see answers to prayer and Satan fleeing from you.

Let’s pray: Father, thank you for being my God, my Father, my Savior, my King. Thank you that You hear me when I pray and seek Your face when Satan comes against me. Let me never forget to pray and seek You for help when Satan comes against me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
