What makes a teacher great?

We are all teachers. We might not stand in front of a classroom, but we teach. We teach our children from the moment they’re born. We also teach others by our actions. What do we teach them?

Being a good or even a great teacher takes compassion. You need to show an interest in what your children or others are experiencing. People will remember you by how you help them. They will remember your compassion, empathy, and lack thereof.

When you show a genuine interest in people, you teach them that not everyone is indifferent and only looking out for number one.

One of the greatest teachers in my life was my grandmother. She taught me respect of others. She was always kind and had a good word for everyone. She was also a Sunday school teacher. She exemplified the Bible, especially the Beatitudes. She was a peacemaker. She didn’t need to shout to make her point. She did it with a calm quiet demeanor. When she spoke everyone listened.

I’ve done my best to be a good teacher to my children, and those who see me every day.

What kind of teacher are you? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me of a schoolhouse on Washington Island, now a museum. In the upper window is a schoolmaster with a bell in his hand.
