This is Easter last year with my son and his girlfriend. Pictured is me and my son.
It’s always fun when you plan a dinner party and know the people you invite will show up. But what about the party you plan and nobody shows up?
Jesus taught a parable about a marriage banquet with many invited guests, and not one of them accepted the invitation.
Matthew 22:1 And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 “and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 4 “Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”‘ 5 “But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. 6 “And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. 7 “But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 ‘Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ 10 “So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. 12 “So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 “Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.” (NKJV)
No matter how well you plan for your dinner party, no matter that you had the finest cuisine available, had the perfect setting, prepared everything to perfection, some people won’t come.
Jesus has a special invitation for you at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Did you receive your invitation? Did you accept your invitation? Will I see you at the marriage supper or are you one of those who refused the invitation and will be left to suffer for eternity apart from Him.
Revelation 19:5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!” 6 And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! 7 “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9 Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” (NKJV)
I’ve had many parties. Some were well attended, some no one showed up. It’s always fun when people come to your party. It’s disappointing when no one comes.
So, the question is, who would I invite? For special parties, I invite everyone. I host an open house on January first every year. Until I moved here, it was rare that anyone came. My last two years, I had a full house and enjoyed the company of many of the people in the building I live in. I will continue to do that until God calls me home or I am no longer able to do the open house.
Who would you invite? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me.
