Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

Modern society is always changing, always evolving. It gets messy. Especially with the older generation who grew up in a different culture.

Modern society is hung up on electronics. The older generation was hung up on the outdoors. I think arthritis would have set in a lot sooner if we used our thumbs for entertainment instead of our legs and arms.

When I was a kid, I never stayed indoors for any reason when I could be outside swimming in summer, building snowmen in winter, ice skating, spending time with friends.

If I could change one thing about modern society, it would be to move the current generation outside. Take away their game controllers and electronics for at least one hour a day and all day on Saturday and Sunday. I know I just gave the younger generation heart failure with that thought. However, think about what would happen if you actually got outside and PLAYED.

The saddest thing for me to see when I walk is the lack of kids playing on the playground equipment in the parks. Parks are empty. When I was a kid, parks were full. Kids and young adults need to get outside and find out what it’s like to soak up sunshine, play sports they only watch on television, and make actual friends, not only virtual ones.

When I was a kid, I knew every kid on the block. I knew who my neighbors were and I knew I could go to them for help if needed. Today, people don’t know who their neighbors are and the only people they can turn to for help are professionals.

Modern society has nothing on the older generation. Yes, there are a lot of great things about society today. As an author, I think the greatest thing to happen in my life is the computer. The bad thing about the computer is that kids don’t know how to use the library to seek out information. Okay, it’s been a long time since I was in a library. However, it’s good to know how to use one when your computer crashes.

When I asked my friend’s grandson if he could tell me what time it was on my watch. He couldn’t. Neither could my grandson a couple of years ago. Can you tell time on a regular not digital clock?

Computers do everything for you, even give you the correct change when you shop. Store clerks don’t know how to count back change. Everything is electronic. Simple things like telling time and counting change I learned in grade school.

What would I change about Modern society? I would make it mandatory for people to LIVE outdoors, do things the old way so they have more tools when electronics fail.

Modern society is handy, but being able to get outside, count change, tell time, are things everyone should know. Get away from your electronics and find out what it’s really like to LIVE.

What would you change about modern society? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me.

I agree with much of what you’ve said, Valerie. I love to walk in the park and see and hear children playing on the swings, slides, etc. But in defense of cashiers everywhere — it’s not that they don’t know how to count change. Every cashier I work with has that skill 🙂 It’s just that after six, seven, and eight hours of running a cash register, our brains are full of numbers to the point of feeling like an overused calculator and it’s easier to let the register do the work 🙂

I agree with a lot of this! When I was a “kid”, a mere 4 years ago before I became a teenager, I did these same things—kids in the neighborhood was a common sight. And now…well, it’s changed a lot in just a few years. Some people argue that it was for the better, that our world has become much more accessible and intelligent. Much to my dismay, it means the life I had when I was a kid is probably not coming back. I’d love to see how the world would change for the better if people spent time away from their phones and spent a few minutes outside for a change.

Anyways, great post! I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

It’s been a lot longer than four years since I was a kid.

I would love kids to have an exposure and experience with the basics so they “see” produce is from earth and milk is not from supermarket!!!

    Nice write Valerie!!
