Day 187 – Commitment

Psalm 88:1 (A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. To the Chief Musician. Set to “Mahalath Leannoth.” A Contemplation of Heman the Ezrahite.) O JEHOVAH, Elohiym of my salvation, I cried out day and night before You. 2 Let my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry. 3 For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to the grave. 4 I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man who has no strength, 5 adrift among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, and who are cut off from Your hand. 6 You laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in depths. 7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and You afflicted me with Your waves. Selah 8 You put away my acquaintances far from me; You made me an abomination to them; I am shut up, and I cannot get out; 9 my eye wastes away because of affliction. JEHOVAH, I called daily upon You; I stretched out my hands to You.

10 Will You work wonders for the dead? Will the dead arise and praise You? Selah 11 Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction? 12 Will Your wonders be known in the dark? Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 13 However, to You I cried out, O JEHOVAH, and in the morning my prayer comes before You. 14 JEHOVAH, why do You cast off my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me? 15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth; I suffer Your terrors; I am distraught. 16 Your fierce wrath went over me; Your terrors cut me off. 17 They came around me throughout the day like water; they engulfed me altogether. 18 Loved one and friend You put far from me, and my acquaintances into darkness.

What do you do when life looks hopeless? Who do you turn to for help?

Heman was a Levite, a singer for Israel who also played the harp and other instruments in the house of JEHOVAH. He was known as David’s seer and prophesied before him. This is his psalm when his life looked hopeless, and he could only turn to JEHOVAH for help.

As a singer and prophet in JEHOVAH’S house, he looked only to Elohiym for help. He knew Elohiym could help him against his enemies.

When you committed yourself to Yeshuwa as Savior and Adonay, you also committed yourself to spending time in His Word so you would know what to do when Satan came against you to destroy you, your family, and friends.

Heman spent his entire life in JEHOVAH’S presence. He not only played instruments before JEHOVAH, but he also knew the Law and knew Elohiym was his only defense against his enemies. He saw Elohiym’s wrath against His enemies. He saw the help JEHOVAH gave His people during the many wars and battles they fought and how JEHOVAH helped them every time.

How much time do you spend in Yeshuwa’s Word? Do you pray to Him first when Satan comes against you, or do you look for help elsewhere before you remember to pray?

Many Christians claim to know Him but fail to read His Word. They readily agree to do what the Word says but then go their way when they close the Word, or leave a Bible study, or church. Their thoughts are on what they need to do for the rest of the day. Church, Bible study, and other Christian activities is a checklist in their life as a Christian. It isn’t a commitment.

Heman’s life was a commitment to JEHOVAH. He knew he could count on JEHOVAH to help him, even when his life looked like it was over.

What does the Word say about commitment?

Psalm 37:3 Trust in JEHOVAH and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself also in JEHOVAH, and He will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to JEHOVAH, trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass. 6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

When you read Yeshuwa’s Word, spending time with Him daily, seeking Him first in everything in your life, He will fight for You, give you the strength you need in the battle, and bring about victory, not defeat in your life.

Heman was committed to JEHOVAH. Are you as committed to Yeshuwa as he was to JEHOVAH? Do you know Yeshuwa’s Word as well as Heman knew the Law? Do you know Yeshuwa is your only defense against Satan?

Let’s pray: Father, thank you that I can come to You whenever Satan comes against me and You will help me. Help me keep my eyes on You, spend time in Your Word, and go to You first in every situation Satan brings against me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
