Day 223 – Bargain
Ps 119:41 VAU. Let Your mercies come also to me, O JEHOVAH—Your salvation according to Your word. 42 Then I will answer him who reproaches me, for I trust in Your word.
43 Take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for I hoped in Your ordinances. 44 I will keep Your law always, forever and ever.
45 I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. 46 I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings and will not be ashamed. 47 I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. 48 My hands also I will lift to Your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes.
God’s names:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
Yeshuwa – Jesus
Theos – Supreme Divinity
God’s character:
Merciful
Salvation
Have you ever bargained with someone for something you wanted? Did the bargaining go well? Did you receive what you wanted?
The psalmist bargained with JEHOVAH. In exchange for JEHOVAH’S mercy and salvation, he made several I will statements.
- I will answer him who reproaches me
- I will always keep Your Law
- I will walk at liberty
- I will seek Your precepts
- I will speak of Your testimonies before kings and will not be ashamed
- I will delight myself in Your commandments
- I will meditate on Your statutes
The psalmist wants only one thing, to walk in JEHOVAH’S Law. He can only do that by spending time with Him. His goal was to spend every moment with JEHOVAH.
Many Christians make bargains with Yeshuwa every day. They claim they will go to church if He gives them what they ask for. Most of the time, the bargain is one-sided and selfish. There’s nothing in it for Yeshuwa.
The psalmist said he would spend his life in service to JEHOVAH if He gave him the desires of his heart, mercy and salvation. It’s a win for both the psalmist and JEHOVAH.
Do you ask Yeshuwa for a new car so you can pick people up for church? Do you ask for a larger paycheck so you can give more tithe to the church? Or do you want the latest car to show off to your clientele, friends, and family? Do you want a larger paycheck so you can afford the new car, home, and other things that bring you status in the community?
What is your underlying motivation for your bargain with Yeshuwa? You know what the psalmist’s motivation was, he wanted to serve JEHOVAH. Do you want to serve Yeshuwa with your requests?
James 4:1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with Theos? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of Theos.
What ‘I will’ statements will you make with Yeshuwa for your requests? Yeshuwa bargained His life for your salvation. What will you give in return for what He already gave?
Let’s pray: Father, too often my prayers are selfish requests without regard to what You want for me. Change my heart to one of service for You. Let Your life flow through me in everything I do and say, knowing You already gave me the greatest gift a person could receive from You, salvation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
