Day 239 – The Tongue

Psalm 120:1 (A Song of Ascents.) In my distress I cried to JEHOVAH, and He heard me. 2 Deliver my soul, O JEHOVAH, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue. 3 What will be given to you, or what will be done to you, you false tongue? 4 Sharp arrows of the warrior, with coals of the broom tree!

5 Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! 6 My soul dwelt too long with one who hates peace. 7 I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war.

God’s names:

JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal

Yeshuwa – Jesus

Theos – Supreme Divinity

Pater – Father

God’s character:

Deliverer

Strength

Redeemer

How often does your tongue get you in trouble? How often do you regret what you said as soon as you said it and wanted a way to vindicate yourself.

The psalmist wanted JEHOVAH to deliver him from his tongue. He saw it as lying and deceitful with sharp arrows and burning coals.

No one is exempted from the problems the tongue brings. Everyone, Christians and non-Christians alike suffer from the same malady.

James 3:2 For we stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 However, no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Theos and Pater, and with it we curse men, been made in the similitude of Theos. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

You need to pray to Yeshuwa for deliverance from your tongue in the same way the psalmist prayed to JEHOVAH for deliverance. You need to pray daily to think before you speak and let David’s prayer be your daily reminder when dealing with other people.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O JEHOVAH, my strength and my Redeemer.

Let’s pray: Father, the psalmist was right, my tongue deceives me throughout the day. Keep my tongue from setting my life on fire. Help me to live in peace with everyone and think before I speak. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
