Day 363 – Discipline

Proverbs 13:24 He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

Nobody likes discipline. Children believe their parents hate them when they discipline them. It isn’t until they become parents that they realize how much their parents loved them.

Solomon showed that a person who spared the rod hated his child. It was only when he disciplined him that he showed him true love. Discipline is at the heart of JEHOVAH’S law. As king of Israel, Solomon had a copy of the law and was required to read it daily. He knew the consequences of disobedience to JEHOVAH’S law.

When you read your Bible, you see how much Yeshuwa loves you. It’s the main theme of the entire Bible. Along with love is the secondary theme – discipline for lack of obedience.

When you look at Elohiym’s character, disciplinarian isn’t usually on your list. However, it should be because He emphasized it throughout the Law, throughout every book in the Old Testament and New Testament. Elohiym blessed His people when they obeyed Him and punished them when they didn’t. It was and is His greatest show of love.

Job 36:5 “Behold, El is mighty, but despises no one; He is mighty in strength of understanding. 6 He does not preserve the life of the wicked but gives justice to the oppressed. 7 He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous; but they are on the throne with kings, for He has seated them forever, and they are exalted. 8 And if they are bound in fetters, held in the cords of affliction, 9 then He tells them their work and their transgressions—that they have acted defiantly. 10 He also opens their ear to instruction, and commands that they turn from iniquity. 11 If they obey and serve Him, they will spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. 12 But if they do not obey, they will perish by the sword, and they will die without knowledge.

When you obey Yeshuwa in everything He tells you, He blesses you. He is generous with His blessings. He is also generous with His discipline. Yeshuwa doesn’t tolerate sin, He disciplines it. His love forgives it when you confess your sin.

Hebrews 12:5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of KURIOS, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 for whom KURIOS loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 If you endure chastening, Theos deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which everyone has become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. will we not much more readily be in subjection to the Pater of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Discipline produces the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Trained by it – receiving correction every time it was warranted to keep you from evil and sin.

Were you disciplined as a child? Many of us were and it caused you to become obedient, so you didn’t face those consequences often. Your parents trained you to obey them. Yeshuwa trains you in obedience to Him. When you disobey Him, He disciplines you. When you confess your sin, He forgives you.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)

What do you need to confess? Confess it now and receive Yeshuwa’s forgiveness.

Let’s pray: Father, I am a sinner and deserve Your discipline. Forgive me, wipe away my sin according to Your Word, and bless me because I love You and only want to do what is right in Your eyes. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
