Instincts, those hair raising moments when you know something is wrong, or the quiet warm feeling when you know everything is right in your world.
Where do your instincts come from?
Many people would argue that their instincts come from an inner source. They just know when everything is right in their world and when to steer clear and walk away.
Are people born with instincts?
People learn from the moment they’re born about right and wrong. They face the consequences of their actions from those in authority over them. When they face the consequences of bad decisions, they soon realize they can’t act in an inappropriate manner and will change their behavior to one that doesn’t bring negative consequences.
Instincts, then, are learned behaviors. Learned from parents from the moment they’re born, learned from their teachers when they start school, learned from their employers, and even from their friends.
Are all instincts good?
No. What does the Bible say about instincts?
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. (NKJV)
Just because it looks good and feels good, doesn’t mean it is good. You need to weigh the consequences of your behavior and what you learned at the hands of those in authority over you.
Some consequences come with a sentence from a judge if you persist on making bad decisions. Instinctively, you know your actions are wrong, yet you persist on doing what you want regardless of the consequences. You believe and hope you will never be found out or caught.
When you listen to your instincts, those you learned at the hands of those who raised you, taught you, and employed you, then you will find yourself on the right path.
One more instinct you should pay attention to:
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (NKJV)
Let your instinct be God-driven and you will always enjoy the blessings only He can give you.
