Think back on your most memorable road trip.

My husband wasn’t impulsive. That was more my style. However, one day when our two children at the time were toddlers, we packed up the van, took a picnic lunch, and headed out the door to places unknown. I had no idea where we were going, but the idea that we were going SOMEWHERE excited me.

We lived in San Diego, California at the time. It was the mid 1970s. With the kids in the back, no seat belts or car seats at that time, we headed for Cleveland National Forest. It was a beautiful day for a drive. When we turned into the park entrance, it surprised me that no one else was around. It was only the four of us. We found a nice place to have a picnic near a small stream. You could step over it, that’s how small it was. However, it offered fun for the kids and my husband. He proceded to build a small dam with help from the kids. They laughed and had a good time. As for me, I went exploring the area always with everyone in sight. I picked up a couple large pinecones and took them home.

We stayed in the park until sunset and time to get home. I always wanted to take an impulsive road trip again, but it never happened. I was content with the one trip we took. It will always stay in my memory as one of the happiest days of my marriage. The pinecone, of the two I brought home, only one remained. I don’t know what happened to the second one. It became part of my decor for many years.

Thanks for reading.
