Meet Rascal. He was the best companion I had. He was a rascal in every sense of the word. I had him for fourteen years.
Cats are nice. But they don’t need you. They are survivors. You can leave them alone for days on end, as long as you leave them with food and water.
Dogs need people and people need dogs. You won’t find unconditional love wrapped up in another human being like you do from a dog. I found it interesting when I thought about the word d o g. When you spell it backwards it spells God. Both have unconditional love. Both would lay down their life for you. One did. No matter what you do, dogs will always love you. Totally. Unconditionally.
No matter what you do, how terrible your sins, Jesus loves you unconditionally. There is nothing you can do to make Him not love you. Dogs are the same way. There is nothing you can do to cause your dog to turn on you and treat you in an unloving manner. Not if he or she chose you as his or her master. Dogs know who will love and take care of them. They will protect you and if you’re sick, they will lay beside you and take your sickness from you. I’ve had that happen more than once. I’ve had cuts, scrapes, and cold sores. When Rascal licked the wound, it healed faster than it would on its own.
Jesus takes your wounds and makes them His own. With His stripes you are healed. With so much in common, it’s no wonder dogs are man’s best friend. Rascal was my best friend. He loved me, and I assure you, I loved him. It was a sad day, indeed, when I said goodbye to my best friend.
Shortly before I lost Rascal, another dog joined my family. Her name was Pip. I was very happy to have her help me with my grief when I needed to let Rascal go. I had Pip for six of her eleven years. She was the family dog. My older son had her first, then he gave her to my daughter, and my daughter gave her to me. My son couldn’t keep her, and my daughter had another dog, so she couldn’t keep Pip who needed love and attention. I gave it to her and she rewarded me with her faithfulness and unconditional love.

This is Pip taken at Christmas in 2015 just before I had to let her go across the rainbow bridge too. She was also a wonderful companion.
I miss both my dogs very much. My life was richer for having them in it.
Which do you prefer? Dogs or cats. For me it will always be dogs for a very simple reason. I’m allergic to cats. Thanks for reading. The images belong to me.
