When it comes to travel, I’m in the minor leagues. I haven’t done a lot of traveling, but I have gone half-way around the world.
My husband was in the Navy. We had two small children and he got stationed on Guam.
Traveling to Guam had it’s interesting points. We started out in San Diego and traveled to Long Beach where we gave up our vehicle. It would be shipped to Guam. My oldest son, three at the time, was one I needed to have an eye on 24/7. My daughter was two. She I didn’t need to be so observant about. She stayed in sight. However, my son got out of my sight. I didn’t realize he could squirm his way through the gate bars and headed unnoticed onto the plane. The pilot brought him back and asked if he belonged to us.
From Long Beach we flew to San Francisco, but due to heavy fog we flew out of Oakland airport to Honolulu. My daughter was sick on the trip, and we ended up laying over in Honolulu in base housing. Twenty-four hours later we caught a standby flight to Guam.
Now that was an interesting flight. We were onboard with a submarine crew going to get their sub in Guam. In the row behind us were three officers. One wore goggles, another wore fins, and the third wore a snorkel. My son kept hitting his head against the seat to bring down the tray behind him. The officer, nonplussed, just put it back in place, repeatedly while wearing his goggles. As for the rest of the submarine crew they were flying paper airplanes through the cabin, making it an enjoyable trip. My husband also had his share in flying paper airplanes through the cabin.
Halfway through the flight, the captain came on to tell us we were in a race with another flight heading to Guam. That flight left before us. We caught a good tailwind and actually landed just before the other flight. So ended an interesting flight to Guam, halfway around the world.
How far have you gone from home? Let me know in the comments. The image belongs to me. Thanks for reading.
