Daily writing prompt
What book are you reading right now?

Many of you know I’m writing a story called Firestorm. In my research for the book, I wanted to read other science fiction work about an aspect of the story. I stumbled on the Catalyst series by JK Franks. I would and would not recommend this series.

Why I would recommend it.

The story is about a geomagnetic storm that changed the lives of the people and showed how people in chaotic situations would react. It’s engaging and well researched. I’m on book 2 as you can see in the book cover.

Why I would not recommend it.

Catalyst is full of words this Christian woman doesn’t use. That put me off right away. The story kept me going. The characters are all the same. They look and talk the same. There are some regional attempts at dialect, but overall, there is no character change to give you a glimpse of what they look like. You need to use your imagination. There are four main characters with one of them being a Pentecostal preacher who can swear with the rest of them. Hard to believe he’s a preacher. Women don’t figure much in this series until the niece of the main character enters the scene. Still, she can swear right along with the men.

Overall, I give this series three stars. If the language doesn’t put you off, it’s a good read.

Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me. What are you reading? Let me know in the comments below.

When the cussing is overdone it spoils a book for me. I find in most instances the language is completely unnecessary and adds nothing. There are other (better) ways to show a character’s rough nature. To me adding a ton of cuss words is just lazy writing 🙂
