Day 29 – The Tongue
Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
- God’s names:
- Yeshuwa – Jesus
- Theos – Supreme Divinity
- Pater – Father
- God’s character:
- Wisdom
- Knowledge
Everyone says things they regret. Words can either calm the situation or make it worse. When you use wisdom before you speak, you can turn a potentially bad situation into a good one.
Solomon was a man of wisdom. However, even a man of wisdom can say things they regret. With 300 wives and 700 concubines, I’m sure he said many regretful things. He learned his lesson many times and wrote this proverb to show what happened when you use your words with wisdom.
When you became a Christian, you didn’t automatically say things that didn’t make things worse. You needed to learn how to use wisdom in everything you said. Even James said the tongue was unruly and untamable.
James 3:1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Theos and Pater, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of Theos.
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
Since you can’t tame the tongue, and you will cause anger with your words, the only thing you can do is pray to Yeshuwa to help you put a guard on your tongue and give you wisdom to think before you say anything that will hurt someone else.
Let’s pray: Father, put a guard on my mouth. Give me wisdom to think before I speak, and when I say things that hurt others, give me the wisdom to seek forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
