Can you keep a secret, or do you hurry to tell the latest gossip to whoever will listen? Do people trust you when they either see you do something or tell you something? One of the most widely read news sources are the tabloids you see on the checkout counters. Publishers look for the juiciest gossip they can find and if they can’t find it, will make it up and print it as fact. I call them scandal sheets.
Solomon heard many things as king of Israel. He noted that those who kept what they heard close to their heart, sought love, but those who were quick to repeat what they saw or heard separated the closest of friends. He also noted that YAHWEH hated those who told tales.
Proverbs 6:12 A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth; 13 he winks with his eyes, he shuffles his feet, he points with his fingers; 14 perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord. 15 Therefore, his calamity will come suddenly; suddenly he will be broken without remedy. 16 These six things YAHWEH hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.
You won’t find grace in heaven if you spread gossip and tell lies.
When you accepted Yeshuwa as Soter and Kurios, what did you hope to find among other Christians? Yet among Christians you find gossip disguised as prayer concerns. Paul warned Christians in Rome about what they heard and what they say.
Romans 3:10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after Theos. 12 They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of Theos before their eyes.”
Paul wouldn’t have warned the church in Rome if there wasn’t a concern for gossip. Solomon said it wisely: Gossip separates friends. You know it’s true in your life. How many people do you know? How many of those people can you trust?
When you hear something, the best thing you can do is keep it to yourself. If you can, go to the person and talk to the person about what you heard about them. They will tell you whether what you heard is true or not. Never repeat what you heard to other people. If you cannot go to the person directly affected by what you heard, take the matter directly to Yeshuwa. Pray and seek His face. In that way, you keep yourself from spreading lies and gossip.
Let’s pray: Father, You know my heart. Search me and know me. If there is wickedness in me, show me and cleanse me from the sins of gossip and lies. My heart, Father, is to show love to everyone and not bring division. Put a guard over my mouth so I will not say anything that would cause trouble to anyone. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
