Day 103 – Work

Proverbs 18:9 He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.

  • God’s names:
  • YAHWEH/JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
  • Elohiym – Supreme God
  • Yeshuwa/Iesous – Jesus
  • God’s character:
  • Busy

Homeless people are everywhere — standing on corners with their signs, in parks, on the streets carrying everything they own — except a job. They simply refuse to work. They expect handouts. I have no compassion for people who refuse to work to provide for themselves. I do have compassion for those who cannot work because of physical limitations.

Solomon named them slothful and the brother of a great destroyer. He knew the great destroyer was Satan who does everything he can to destroy people’s lives. Solomon told people there is more work in an ant than in their lives.

Proverbs 6:6 Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, 7 who, having no captain, overseer or ruler, 8 provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. 9 How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep— 11 So will your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.

When you open your Bible for the first time and start reading the first chapter of Genesis, you see YAHWEH working. His work of creation hasn’t stopped. It was only the beginning of His work. Every day science finds new things both on the earth and in the universe. YAHWEH doesn’t sleep and He never stops working.

What makes people think they can live on handouts from day to day when Elohiym hasn’t stopped working?

YAHWEH gave man instructions about working. He told them in the Law He gave Moses that man was to work for six days and take only one day off, the seventh day, because it was the only day in creation when Elohiym rested.

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you will labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of YAHWEH your Elohiym. In it you will do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days YAHWEH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore, YAHWEH blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

You find the same slothfulness in the church. Pastors stand in front of their congregations begging for people to help in the various areas of the church. However, people hand the clipboard to the next person and don’t put their name down as one who would gladly serve in the classrooms, hospitality, or wherever there is a need.

You did not become a Christian to sit on your hands and do nothing. Yeshuwa told His disciples to go out into the world and teach the gospel to everyone before He went back to heaven. I don’t see long lines of Christians waiting to sign up to go. Instead, they sit in church, listen to the stories the missionaries who signed up and went talk about the work they do on the mission field. They gladly give to the mission work, but they refuse to put their names on the list to go.

When will you do more than read Yeshuwa’s Word. When will you do what Yeshuwa asked you to do instead of holding out your hand for whatever tidbit you can get because you refuse to work?

James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (NKJV)

Look for ways you can serve in your congregation, fulfill Yeshuwa’s plan for your life. Don’t expect someone else to do what Yeshuwa called you to do.

Let’s pray: Father, help me do the work You called me to do and do it to the best of my ability. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
