Day 107 – Discernment
Proverbs 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.
- God’s names:
- YAHWEH/JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
- Elohiym – Supreme God
- Yeshuwa/Iesous – Jesus
- Theos – Supreme Divinity
- Huios of Anthropos – Son of Man
- God’s character:
- Teacher
- King
- Son of Man
Have you ever walked into a conversation, thought you knew what they were talking about and made a comment that was wholly not applicable to the conversation? People do it all the time. I’ve done it.
As king and land owner Solomon saw people every day and heard conversations on every topic and heard when people spoke without knowing the full topic, when they did it brought shame to the person who spoke out of turn, and showed the folly of speaking without knowing what was going on. Solomon knew he needed to listen to everything YAHWEH told him, before he acted on what He said. To go ahead of Elohiym was to show foolishness and show he didn’t pay attention to what YAHWEH said.
Christians can fall into the same situation of speaking before they know what the situation is about. Christians who read the Bible without studying it, believe they know what Yeshuwa’s Word says and bring their own interpretation to the table, speaking about something they know little about and bringing shame to themselves when they learn the truth of the subject.
When Yeshuwa started His ministry and people started listening to what He said the rulers and Pharisees discounted what He said and did because they didn’t know where He was born, only where He called home. They knew the prophecies but discounted Him by what they saw and didn’t take the time to find out anything about Him, to their shame.
John 7:45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!” 47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus (he who came to Iesous by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?” 52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” 53 And everyone went to his own house.
When Yeshuwa started calling His disciples to Him, they found one who tested what he knew about the Messiah.
John 1:43 The following day Iesous wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Iesous of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Iesous saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Iesous answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Huios of Theos! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Iesous answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you will see heaven open, and the angels of Theos ascending and descending upon the Huios of Anthropos.”
Nathanael knew what the Law said, but he was also willing to search out the matter before he made any judgments about what he heard. In so doing when he spoke, he thought he had all the facts, yet Yeshuwa still told him he had more to learn.
As Christians, you always have more to learn. It’s good to talk about the Bible. It’s the only way to gain an understanding. You need to go into the study with an open mind to learn and not with a closed mind that does not want to understand more than what you already know. The Pharisees and rulers of the Law did that regarding Yeshuwa. They knew what they read in the Law and judged Him without discerning the full truth about Yeshuwa.
2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to Theos, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
You need to study Yeshuwa’s Word. When you do, you will find approval from Theos and a good reputation for discerning Scripture.
Let’s pray: Father, give me a discerning heart to know You more fully, so that when I speak, I am not speaking without knowledge of You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
