Day 154 – Honesty
Proverbs 20:23 Diverse weights are an abomination to YAHWEH, and dishonest scales are not good.
- God’s names:
- YAHWEH/JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
- Yeshuwa/Iesous – Jesus
- God’s character:
- Honest
- Wisdom
From the moment sin entered the Garden of Eden, dishonesty has been in men’s hearts. People will do whatever it takes to put extra money in their pockets, even if it meant tipping the scales in their favor. It’s the reason we have the truth in lending law to guard against dishonesty.
Solomon saw how merchants tipped the scales in their favor and told the people to be watchful of dishonesty among the tradesmen because those who practiced it were an abomination to YAHWEH.
Solomon gave the people a list of those things which were an abomination to YAHWEH.
Proverbs 6:16 These six things YAHWEH hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.
If you look at those seven things, you can see how easily dishonest weights and measures fit into what YAHWEH hates.
- A lying tongue — the trademark of a person who will tip the scales in their favor.
- A heart that devises wicked plans — before you can lie about what you’re trying to sell to the public; you need to plan.
You don’t need to be a tradesman to be dishonest. You find it in every walk of life.
Micah 6:9 YAHWEH’S voice cries to the city — Wisdom will see your name: “Hear the Rod! Who appointed it? 10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the short measure that is an abomination? 11 Will I count pure those with the wicked scales, and with the bag of deceitful weights? 12 For her rich men are full of violence, her inhabitants have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
When you became a Christian, you committed your life to honesty before Yeshuwa. Yet there are as many dishonest people in the church as there are in the world and the world is quick to point them out. They ridicule the church because of their lavish cathedrals, built with pleas of good fortune to anybody who would contribute to their cause.
Before you give to the projects of the many ministers who try to make you feel guilty for not giving to them, investigate their finances, see where the money is really going. When you find an honest minister who is out to save souls instead of lining their pockets, that is the minister to follow. Dishonest scales are as abundant in the church as it is in the world. Know what you’re contributing to before you open your wallet.
Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.
Always pray before you give to someone whose only interest is in their wealth.
Let’s pray: Father, give me discernment in my finances and the people I do business with. Show me those ministers who are faithful to You and not faithful to their pocket. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
