Day 239 – Faithfulness

Proverbs 27:8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest is a man who wanders from his place.

• Kurios – Supreme Authority
• Theos – Supreme Divinity

You often hear about men who have been unfaithful to their wives. If they are famous or celebrities, their unfaithfulness is spread across the scandal sheets. You see it glaring at you from the checkout counters. Divorce courts are full of couples whose husbands couldn’t stay home.

Solomon could talk about men who wandered with first-hand knowledge. His three-hundred wives and seven-hundred concubines can attest to his wandering eye. It was common for men to have more than one wife. No one had more wives or concubines than Solomon. You could say he was an expert in faithfulness.

When YAHWEH told Moses there would come a day when Israel would want a king, He told Moses what the parameters for the king should be. The king was to have one wife.

Deuteronomy 17:14 “When you come to the land which YAHWEH your Elohiym is giving you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you will surely set a king over you whom YAHWEH your Elohiym chooses; one from among your brethren you will set as king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 But he will not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for YAHWEH has said to you, ‘You will not return that way again.’ 17 Neither will he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor will he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. 18 Also, it will be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he will write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. 19 And it will be with him, and he will read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear YAHWEH his Elohiym and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes, 20 that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.

If you know Solomon’s life, you know he erred on more than one of those commands YAHWEH set forth regarding the king. His many wives turned him from Elohiym to worship false elohiyms. He had so many horses that he had chariot cities for them. And he married the princess of Egypt.

And yet, YAHWEH set His love on him, and in the end of his life, he did return to YAHWEH.

Does Solomon’s example give men the right to be unfaithful to their wives? No. The Law was clear about it, and Solomon with wisdom from YAHWEH told the people they should be faithful to their wives and not wander.

When you accepted Yeshuwa as Soter and Kurios and hopefully began reading your Bible, you saw that He told the people they were to have one wife, male and female as Elohiym ordained in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 2:21 And YAHWEH Elohiym caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which YAHWEH Elohiym had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore, a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Matthew 19:3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” 4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what Theos has joined together, let not man separate.”

Paul gave Timothy instructions about leadership in the church.

1 Timothy 3:1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of Theos?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Unfaithfulness is as high among Christians as it is among non-Christians. You are to set an example for those around you and not let your feet wander.

Paul also told the church at Ephesus about love and marriage.

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to Kurios. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christos is head of the church; and He is the Soter of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christos, let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christos also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Kurios does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christos and the church. 33 Nevertheless, let each one of you in particular love his own wife as himself and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Solomon knew the Law, and he wrote proverbs that support YAHWEH’S command for one wife. He just didn’t practice what YAHWEH commanded.

As Christians, you are commanded to love your wives, and wives to love their husbands. When you do, you fulfill the Law YAHWEH gave Moses, and Yeshuwa told the Pharisees they were to obey.

Let’s pray: Father, help me submit to my spouse with love as You directed in Your Word. Let me be faithful in my marriage and not turn away from the one You gave me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
