The world looks for collateral in everything you want to do. Do you want to buy a car, home, start a business — you need to show the bank or your investors that you are good for the loan you’re asking for from them. It isn’t just good enough that you pay your bills on time, you need to show that you have a good credit report.

Have you applied for a credit card? Have you been turned down even though you haven’t been late on your bills? People want to sell you their goods, but the bottom line is your credit report. There are ways to gain credit with a co-signature from someone you know and trust.

Solomon knew the practice of surety — collateral. It was used to ensure people could be trusted. Methods of surety had been around since YAHWEH’S creation. He was aware of the many forms of surety. People would gather in the gate of the city and discuss financial agreements. Abraham conferred with people for a plot of land to bury Sarah. Boaz sat with the elders at the gate to buy the plot of land belonging to Naomi and Ruth, and the reward for buying the land was Solomon’s many times great grandmother, Ruth from whom his father David was born, and then himself.

Genesis 23:3 Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4 “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” 5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 6 “Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead.” 7 Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. 8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you” 10 Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying, 11 “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!” 12 Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land; 13 and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there.” 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 “My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead.” 16 And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants. Ruth 4:1 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there; and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz had spoken came by. So Boaz said, “Come aside, friend, sit down here.” So he came aside and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the close relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, sold the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 And I thought to inform you, saying, ‘Buy it back in the presence of the inhabitants and the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am next after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance.” 6 And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.” 7 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel. 8 Therefore the close relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” So he took off his sandal. 9 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.” 11 And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the house of Israel; and may you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. 12 May your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring which YAHWEH will give you from this young woman.”

Solomon also saw the illicit means of collateral when a seductress was involved. Surety was a means to an end. The person held the pledge until payment was made.

During creation, when YAHWEH created mankind and Satan tempted man. Satan demanded surety from YAHWEH. YAHWEH gave His Huios as collateral for mankind. He guaranteed payment for the souls of mankind.

John 3:16 “For Theos so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For Theos did not send His Huios into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Yeshuwa fulfilled the promise YAHWEH made to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 3:14 So YAHWEH Elohiym said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you will go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you will bruise His heel.”

Yeshuwa is your surety, your guarantee for eternal life. When you accepted Him as your Soter and Kurios, you accepted YAHWEH’S payment for your salvation.

Love is the guarantee for your salvation. Have you accepted Yeshuwa’s love for you? No one else will offer you love as surety for your life. Only Yeshuwa.

Let’s pray: Father, thank you for giving Your Son as my guarantee of salvation. Help me to live my life praising You for providing the means of my salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Your Son. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
