In the late 1980s a phrase became popular and is repeated many times day by just about everyone since — Just do it. It throws wisdom out the window and allows for anything a person wants to do or thinks about doing. It’s a catch phrase for everything a person does in life and often leads to questionable behavior. Another popular phrase is — Have it your way. No wisdom involved, just whatever you want to do and however you want to do it — Everything is acceptable.
What it does is cause the older generation to sit and shake their heads because wisdom guided their lives, not whatever a person wanted to do. The time for thinking things through before a person acted was gone and so was their wealth.
Solomon often taught his son to keep wisdom close because it would keep him out of trouble.
Proverbs 5:1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding, 2 That you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge. 3 For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; 4 but in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lay hold of hell. 6 Lest you ponder her path of life — her ways are unstable; you do not know them. 7 Therefore, hear me now, my children, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. 8 Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, 9 lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one; 10 lest aliens be filled with your wealth, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner; 11 and you mourn at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, 12 and say: “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised correction! 13 I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me! 14 I was on the verge of total ruin, in the midst of the assembly and congregation.”
As king in Israel, Solomon saw how people lived their lives — with wisdom or debauchery. One provided honor, while the other led to ruin.
When you became a Christian, you chose an honorable route for your life. You committed your life to wisdom and knowledge, listening to those with more understanding to keep your feet from the path of unrighteousness and evil living.
You have two choices in life. You can choose the narrow path that leads to eternal life, or you can choose the wide path that leads to destruction. Wisdom stands on the narrow path while Satan stands on the wide path.
Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. (NKJV)
Isaiah 30:18 Therefore YAHWEH will wait, that He may be gracious to you; and therefore, He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For YAHWEH is a Elohiym of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him. 19 For the people will dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; you will weep no more. He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you. 20 And though Adonay gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, but your eyes will see your teachers. 21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.
When you listen for Yeshuwa’s voice, you will always follow the path leading to eternal life. It is only when your ears become dull of hearing that you lose the path and wander along the path of destruction.
Wisdom doesn’t say, “Just do it.” Wisdom doesn’t say, “Have it your way.” Wisdom says this is the way and Yeshuwa says He is the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to Abba except through Him.
John 14:6 Iesous said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Pater except through Me.
Which way will you follow today? Will you follow wisdom or will you walk however you please? The choice is yours. One gives you life, the other leads to destruction.
Let’s pray: Father, You have given me to roads to follow, but only one leads to You. Help me follow the path of life and live my life with wisdom and honor in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
