Some people like having their ego stroked. It gives them a sense of importance. We’ve all listened to people introduce speakers to their audience. The introduction is full of flattering words intended to make you see the speaker as important, and the speaker stands behind the podium after the introduction smiling in that benign way that would make a person choke.

Solomon listened to flattery every day when foreign officials came into his courts. He knew they tried to stroke his ego, but he knew their intentions and their intentions became a noose around their necks as he saw through their honeyed words.

Job was a good example of friends who used flattery and accusations against him.

Job 17:5 He who speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children will fail.

Not the eyes of the person the flatterer speaks to, but the flatterer’s children’s eyes will fail.

Solomon spoke to his son about flattery.

Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep your father’s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother. 21 Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck. 22 When you roam, they will lead you; when you sleep, they will keep you; and when you awake, they will speak with you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, 24 to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress.

People often use the phrase — Flattery will get you nowhere. Why? Because they see through the flattery to the heart of the person who tries to stroke his ego with flattering words. Instead, flattery is a noose around the flatterer’s neck.

Solomon also knew the Law. YAHWEH’S first commandment showed the people who they were to worship.

Exodus 20:3 “You will have no other elohiyms before Me. 4 You will not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you will not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, YAHWEH your Elohiym, am a jealous Elohiym, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Those who came into Solomon’s courts with flattery on their lips tried to make Solomon more than who he was, a servant of the Elyown El. He saw through their flattery, which became a noose around the flatterer’s neck.

Some people live on flattery. They preen before their audiences who seem to worship them for what they represent. They live on the praises of the people who worship them.

When you read your Bible, you see that Yeshuwa confronted the Pharisees who lived on the praises of the people. They heard what the people said about them. Every day the people stroked their egos until they lost sight of who they represented and took the people’s worship as earned.

John 12:42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of Theos.

Flattery is a noose around the neck of the flatterer, and those who believe them fall into the trap they set. They lose sight of what is important and live on the praise of their admirers.

As Christians, you know there is only one person you should follow, live for, and worship. His name is Yeshuwa. He will never stroke your ego or tell you things you want to hear. He will remind you about why He came to earth, lived among the people, taught them about the kingdom of Theos, died on the cross, and rose the third day — for your salvation.

YAHWEH told Moses He was a jealous Elohiym. He is. He deserves your praise and worship because He created you. When you lose sight of your Creator, you start listening to flattery and flattery becomes your noose.

Yeshuwa is your Soter and Kurios. You are not His. There is only one Elohiym, and it isn’t you. Get off the throne and stop listening to flattery takes your eyes off Yeshuwa and onto yourself. Humble yourself before Him and give Him your praise and honor. For He alone is worthy.

James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of Kurios, and He will lift you up.

Revelation 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” … 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” 14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.

Who receives your praise and worship? Are you a flatterer or the recipient of flattery? Remember who created you and give Him your honor, praise, and worship. For He alone is worthy.

Let’s pray: Father, give me discernment when people try to flatter me. Let me know there is only one person worthy of honor and praise, and Father, it isn’t me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
