Every year you start getting solicitation requests for money from organizations who help the poor and helpless during the holiday season. What do you do with those requests? Do they go unanswered or do you consider the request and donate?
Solomon saw the plight of the poor every day. He considered their cause — whether or not it was just and gave liberally. Scripture shows us that he gave generously. He also showed wisdom to those who came to him to discern the matter put before him. He knew what YAHWEH said in the Law about giving to the poor.
Leviticus 19:9 ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you will not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor will you gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 And you will not glean your vineyard, nor will you gather every grape of your vineyard; you will leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am YAHWEH your Elohiym.
Leviticus 19:15 ‘You will do no injustice in judgment. You will not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you will judge your neighbor.
Why did you become a Christian? Did someone help you in your time of need? Did you tell others what your gift did for them? Did you see the generosity of other Christians and want to be part of that?
Every year during the holidays especially, pastors will promote the needs of the poor around the world. One organization — Samaritan’s Purse, not only goes into devastated areas to give relief, but they have a way to help children everywhere at Christmas with Operation Christmas Child. They provide shoeboxes for people to send necessary items and fun toys to children all over the world. Most people don’t know what the impact a simple shoebox means to a boy or girl. Last year, we had a person stand in our congregation and told what that shoebox meant to her when she received it. She became a Christian because of someone’s generosity.
Many people will give generously to help the poor people in their community. Others will see no reason to give and walk away unaffected by their stories or their poverty.
Solomon said the righteous will help but the wicked will walk away.
Yeshuwa sat in the treasury and watched how people gave. A widow woman with two mites, her entire livelihood gave those two mites.
Mark 12:41 Now Iesous sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. 42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
Many Christians look at their checkbook and consider whether they have enough to give to poor people and what it would cost them to give. The balance determines whether or not they give. They don’t consider the Person who provides everything they have and the cost He gave for their salvation.
Yeshuwa doesn’t look at your checkbook. He looks at your heart. A person with a generous heart will not consider his checkbook first, he will reach in and give because they give to Yeshuwa first and Yeshuwa gives back more than they could comprehend.
It isn’t in what you give that matters to Yeshuwa. Only that you give. Those who consider the cost will not give. They are truly poor among Yeshuwa’s people.
When you give with a generous heart, Yeshuwa will bless you beyond what you can measure.
Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” (NKJV)
How will YAHWEH bless you?
Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says YAHWEH of Tsaba’, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor will the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says YAHWEH of Tsaba’; 12 “and all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” says YAHWEH of Tsaba’.
You have no reason not to give with a generous heart when Elohiym promises to give you even more than you can imagine.
Let’s pray: Father, open my heart and hand. Give me a generous spirit, knowing that someone will benefit from what I give. Let me not count the cost but give with a heart that seeks after You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
