What does envy look like? We all at some point envy someone else for their achievements, their ability to attract friends, even their good looks. Envy is that little bugger that gets into your brain and tells you they’re better than you and have more going than you. Sometimes envy leads to murder.

Solomon saw what envy did to people. His brothers wanted to take the throne of his father. Absalom went to war with his father to take the throne, and died because of it, and his older brother tried to take the throne before his father was even dead. His mother, Bathsheba, needed to go to a dying man and plead for her son. Envy can destroy nations if it remains unchecked.

2 Samuel 15:10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’” (NKJV)

1 Kings 1:23 So they told the king, saying, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed down before the king with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and look! They are eating and drinking before him; and they say, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ 26 But he has not invited me—me your servant—nor Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon. 27 Has this thing been done by my lord the king, and you have not told your servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?” 28 Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king took an oath and said, “As YAHWEH lives, who has redeemed my life from every distress, 30 just as I swore to you by YAHWEH Elohiym of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ so I certainly will do this day.” 31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and paid homage to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”

Envy doesn’t just affect nations; it infects the hearts of everyone who wants something someone else has. That emotion is in little children who take toys from others and call them theirs.

It was present in the first family YAHWEH created. Cain envied his brother Abel because YAHWEH looked more favorably on Abel than on him, so Cain killed him.

Genesis 4:4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And YAHWEH respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 6 So YAHWEH said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” 8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. 9 Then YAHWEH said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 “When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

Envy makes you a fugitive to your friends and family. Maybe not literally, but emotionally because nobody trusts you.

What kind of person were you before you became a Christian? Were you envious of everyone around you? Did you think you would never measure up? Did you see other Christians who seemed to have everything you wanted — a better knowledge of Scripture, more blessings, more respect from fellow Christians — Yes, envy is alive and well in the church. You don’t need to go far to feel envy feed your spirit.

Galatians 5:12 I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off! 13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! 16 I say then: Walk in the Pneuma, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Pneuma, and the Pneuma against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Pneuma, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of Theos. 22 But the fruit of the Pneuma is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christos’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Pneuma, let us also walk in the Pneuma. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Envy kills. Love edifies. Therefore, if you are in Yeshuwa, you need to walk in Him and not obey the lusts of the flesh.

1 John 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of Theos abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one. 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Pater is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Pater but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of Theos abides forever.

Envy is deadly. It causes you to do things you would otherwise not do. Don’t let it rule over your spirit. Pray and seek Yeshuwa and His strength to overcome what the enemy would put in your spirit.

Yeshuwa told you that He already overcame the world for you.

John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (NKJV)

Yeshuwa took all your sins and nailed them to the cross, including the sin of envy. Don’t let Satan destroy your life with envy. Look at the cross and see it nailed there with the blood of Yeshuwa Christos. Then let joy fill your heart because He overcame the world for you.

Let’s pray: Father, I know I envy others at various times. Let me see me the way you see me with the gifts and abilities You gave me and not want the gifts and abilities You gave someone else. Take envy out of my heart and let me walk in the joy and love of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
