Day 293 – Discipline
Proverbs 29:17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your soul.

- Pater/Abba – Father
- Pneuma – Violent Wind, Breath, Spirit

- God’s character:
- Disciplinarian
Have you seen people you believe were never disciplined when they were younger? It seems to be the behavior of many children today. Yet there are well-behaved children who show respect to everyone and are a true joy to be around.
Solomon knew correction and gave it to his children. Then he taught the people to correct their children so they would be a delight to them and not a source of grief.
Proverbs 13:24 He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.
Solomon also knew what YAHWEH said about Abraham and his children after him.
Genesis 18:17 And YAHWEH said, “Should I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of YAHWEH, to do righteousness and justice, that YAHWEH may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”
Solomon knew discipline brought obedience and obedience brought delight to parents. Without discipline children run wild and bring disgrace to parents.
As Christians, you know Yeshuwa also disciplines His children.
Hebrews 12:4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of KURIOS, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 for whom KURIOS loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 If you endure chastening, Theos deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Should we not much more readily be in subjection to the Pater of Pneuma and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
What I find interesting in the Scripture above is that discipline is training in righteousness. Without training, people are undisciplined and a disgrace not only to their parents, but everyone around them.
Yeshuwa was also obedient to His parents.
Luke 2:41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Iesous lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Pater’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Iesous increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with Theos and men.
Yeshuwa was an obedient son to his earthly parents, which made Him an obedient Huios to His Abba in heaven.
Did you bring delight or shame to your parents? Did you learn through discipline to be a delight to them and to your teachers and employers?
Discipline trains. Disobedience brings shame.
Let’s pray: Father, help me to always be a delight to You as Your child, knowing that I am never too old for discipline. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
